Creating A Writing Sanctuary for Inspiration

Why is creating a writing sanctuary essential for every author? Simply, it is a way to have space in which to find inspiration and lose yourself in your craft.

The goal is to move away from the feeling like writing is a forced chore; such a feeling inevitably results in experiencing writer’s block.

Choose a spot that will fuel both creativity and productivity. Roald Dahl, author of Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, transformed a garden shed into a writing space. Yet, many writers do not have a garden shed available.

So, survey your home for that perfect spot for writing—from a spare room to a corner in your living room. Keep in mind that to avoid naps, the bedroom should be off-limits as you are creating your writing sanctuary. Further, you should choose an area of your home that is designated for other activities; for example, the kitchen table where you have always paid your bills. Remember, you are dedicating a space that will encourage your mind to enter writing mode.

Make sure that you have a comfortable chair that encourages good posture; otherwise, you may feel discouraged by back strain to progress through your project.

Keep your essential writing tools within the space, so you will not need to go on a mission to find your favorite pen, or paper.

Establish good lighting is also key. Natural light is best, so it is ideal to pick a spot near a window. If this is not an option, choose LED lightbulbs for nearby lamps.

Block out unnecessary distractions. Turn your phone on vibrate or put it in another room.

Finally, consider a plant in your space. It is amazing how a touch of nature will help you to relax and improve your creativity!
